Grant Awarded for Gardner Conservation Project (download pdf)

North County Land Trust, Inc. has been awarded a grant from the North Quabbin Regional Landscape Partnership to pay costs associated with the conservation of land in northern Gardner. This $3,000 grant will help the land trust cover initial expenses of a project to conserve land in the Bailey, Wilder and Perley Brook watersheds.

The protection of these watersheds is very important to the ecological and human health of the City. The Perley Brook watershed protects drinking water flowing into the Perley Brook Reservoir. Together with Wilder Brook and Bailey Brook, these three watersheds comprise an area of Core Habitat designated by the state’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. This Core Habitat designation means that the area contains rare plant habitat, rare animal habitat, and viable natural plant communities which support these habitats.

North County Land Trust's own Rome Conservation Area is in the Wilder Brook watershed. This 175 acre conservation area lies between an area of City-owned land in the Perley Brook watershed to the east and the Bailey Brook watershed to the west. Rome Conservation Area is strategically located between these watersheds and can link conserved lands to form a larger conservation landscape.

Alan Rousseau, President of North County Land Trust and a Gardner resident commented: “We are excited to be working to protect land in this important watershed area. Working with local landowners and the City of Gardner, we are confident that we can conserve more land while keeping it in private ownership and on the tax rolls.”
